Some dream of an entirely new music industry, built from scratch with no labels, automated distribution, no collecting societies, no managers and no overhead. Just pure revenue streams to all the artists from their listeners.
But is the industry really that broken and why makes this ecosystem sense? Where are we today? And isn't blockchain rather an evolution than a revolution? What is a tangible business model and already generates revenues? Where are the opportunities and how can we make best use of this Power?

After working on this topic for the last twenty years, science has now achieved breakthroughs in building three-dimensional functional structures using DNA Origami. These can be used to build tailor-made traps for viruses or to build molecules that specifically recognize cancer cells and switch on for targeted antibody immunotherapies. Moreover, engineered DNA has now been used to build the first machines in molecular scale, paving the way for the industrial application of synthetic DNA objects and DNA computing. together a group of European business and industry representatives to discuss the
challenges and opportunities of data access and re-use for the common good. Who we are:
The Data Tank is a nonprofit Think and Do Tank based in Brussels, that focuses on re-using
data differently to serve the common good. Our vision means a significant shift in how we
think about data, how we access it and what we do with it. We are working to create two
programmes to advance data use and re-use. Our Social License explores different
approaches to gaining consent and creating data management guidelines, and identifying
best practices that can be systemised for data reuse. In our Data Stewardship Programme, we
are redefining the role of Data Stewards as trusted enablers who will take the lead in
identifying the challenges that data can help to solve - and do it in a responsible way, so that
data reuse and sharing become a valued part of everyday life.

Along with sleep, fitness and stress management, nutrition is a significant lever to naturally enhance individual performance. According to recent studies, the right diet must above all be microbiome-friendly, i.e. promote a balanced intestinal flora. As a "second brain", our gut flora controls (e.g. via the gut-brain axis) functions such as impulse control, resilience, sleep and many more, which are of great importance especially for executives.

The dangers of facial recognition: How biometrics put people's lives at risk

Biometric ID cards or huge databases with facial images and digital fingerprints - biometrics are increasingly playing an important role in Germany and Europe. German police are already using facial recognition to track down criminals or people with expired visas. For everyone without a criminal past and with a valid residence permit, the dangers of this data have so far been more of a theoretical nature: What could possibly happen if the authorities have a photo of me?
Reporting by Bayerischer Rundfunk demonstrates what happens when this data falls into the wrong hands. In some cases, biometrics can put the lives of people in danger. In Afghanistan, US troops and their allies have biometrically registered millions of people - with thousands of biometric devices. These devices are now in the hands of the Taliban. Reporters from BR Data/BR Recherche and the BR AI + Automation Lab accompanied an IT expert from the Chaos Computer Club for months. He finally found evidence that former Afghan local staff are in danger because Western forces failed to protect their biometric data from the Taliban.
In this presentation, the reporters show how biometric scanners work, make the risks of the technology tangible and trace secret military data to US biometric databases.

Battery recycling is still in an infant phase. Currently most batteries are burned in 1400 degree Celcius hot ovens at the end of life. Most Lithium is lost, same goes for Graphite and other materials. Merely Cobalt and Nickel are recovered, at high energy invests, though. And at high costs, end-of-life batteries are a liability not an asset, these days. Also, very few batteries go into 2nd life, opportunities are hardly understood.
Now there is a new generation of tech start-ups on stage that comes with a mission to change this. Improve lifetimes of batteries. Get to meaningful 2nd life. Recover all battery materials at low costs. We talk with tozero (battery shredding & hydrometallurgy), Circuli-ion (semi-automatic battery disassembly), Bavertis (battery life extension) and LiBcycle (reverse logistics for batteries) about their crucial role in developing and establishing future-relevant circular battery value networks. Back in 1977, the sociologist Michel Foucault shaped the expression "sexuality dispositive" to describe the central role of sexuality within power: Sexuality affects the individual, but sexuality also controls the population. Forty years later, "The race to create the ultimate AI sex partner is on, Germany's first sex doll brothel opened years ago, and 20% of the most visited websites worldwide provide mainstream porn – with justified critics from industry innovators such as Erika Lust. At the same time, the debate on women's sexual self-determination is in full swing, as the disputes on the right to abort demonstrate. What is our current sexuality dispositive? What does sexual determination in terms of a rising demand for labiaplasties or interventions that alter the size and shape of the inner or outer labia?

Patrick Vogel ist ein echtes Multitalent, das seinen Ursprung im pulsierenden Ruhrgebiet hat und seine Flügel in der vielfältigen Kulturszene Hamburgs entfaltet hat. Als 3D Visual Artist, Porsche NFT Lead Artist, Gründer und Super Creative Director von ALT/SHIFT international hat er in den letzten Jahren eine beeindruckende Karriere hingelegt. Nach Abschluss seines Architektur- und Designstudiums (M.A.) begann er zunächst als Architekt zu arbeiten. Doch bald spürte er, dass seine wahre Leidenschaft an anderer Stelle lag. Mutig traf er die Entscheidung, einen radikalen Schritt zu wagen. Mit der Gründung seines innovativen Designstudios ALT/SHIFT in Hamburg fand er schließlich seine wahre Berufung und ist seitdem in seiner kreativen Welt angekommen. Neben seiner Tätigkeit in seinem eigenen Studio verwirklicht Patrick Vogel auch seine persönlichen Visionen in einer Kunstform, die vor Energie und Farbenpracht nur so sprüht. Seine Werke kennen keine Grenzen und nehmen lebendig Gestalt an, sei es in der virtuellen oder realen Welt.

Jakob Kudsk Steensen and Dr Bettina Kames on Berl-Berl
Arts & Culture
Artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen and Dr Bettina Kames, Director, LAS Art Foundation, discuss Berl-Berl, a continuously evolving project that revives lost mythologies and perspectives on wetlands. Commissioned by LAS in 2021, Berl-Berl originally took the form of a large-scale exhibition at Halle am Berghain, Berlin, which travelled to ARoS Museum of Art in 2022, and an online artwork BerlBerl.world, which remains accessible. For the 2023 Forum der Zukunft, Kudsk Steensen has adapted the project for 10- and 30-minute presentations within the planetarium at Deutsches Museum.
Berl-Berl is a living simulation of a virtual pulsating swamp. It pays tribute to the swamp origins of most major cities in Europe, including Berlin, which was a wetland formed over 10,000 years ago until it was drained in the 1700s. ‘Berl’, the ancient Slavic word for ‘swamp’, is thought to be the origin of ‘Berlin’. The work’s structure takes inspiration from Triglav: a deity that represents the three dimensions of Slavic cosmology: heaven, earth, and the underworld.
The artist spent months researching the remaining wetlands of Berlin-Brandenburg, creating an archive of images using a method of macro photogrammetry in which he takes hundreds of images of a single object such as a leaf or patch of mud. Kudsk Steensen renders his findings in a 3D plan to create an immersive landscape using the video game platform Unreal Engine. Partnering with the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, he also wove local specimens from their extensive archive into the visual and acoustic world of Berl-Berl. Kudsk Steensen also collaborated with sound artist Matt McCorkle and singer Arca to create the world’s soundscape. Songs were essential to ancient wetland culture and used to navigate the swamp and to share its mythologies. In Berl-Berl, Arca’s voice morphs with environmental sounds that include those made by local amphibians.

The Quantum Superorganism: In conversation with Jonathon Keats

Wolfgang Kerler (1E9) in conversation with Jonathon Keats who contributed two exhibits to this year's Festival: The Quantum Entanglement Apparatus and the Quantum Multiverse Generator. Both are part of a bigger project in collaboration with Goethe Institute San Francisco called "The Quantum Superorganism".
With the rise of nationalism and xenophobia, we have become our own worst enemy. The intolerable condition of human intolerance appears only to be increasing under the stress of climate change, a planetary crisis that demands global cooperation.
This project seeks a solution through fundamental physics.
According to quantum mechanics, when two or more particles are entangled, they behave as if they were one and the same. Any change to one instantaneously and identically changes those entangled with it even if they’re a universe apart.
Might quantum entanglement also provide the ultimate form of social cohesion?
The technology to entangle humankind is simple: Exposed to ambient light, a nonlinear crystal entangles photons. Groups of entangled photons are scattered with mirrors. The photoelectric effect translates their entangled state to the bodies of people willing to become a part of the quantum superorganism.
If you choose to get entangled, you’ll have to take your entanglement on faith, as any attempt to measure a quantum system disentangles it. The quantum superorganism will literally be broken up by skepticism about it.

Daran angelehnt wird der Bitcoin »die orangene Pille« genannt, denn wer sich mit ihm auseinandersetzt, dem wird die Macht von Wall Street und Zentralbanken in unserer Welt bewusst. Und der Bitcoin verheißt die Befreiung davon: Er ist unabhängig von zentralen Instanzen wie Banken und nicht durch sie manipulierbar.
In dieser Session erklärt Ijoma Mangold, wie sogar er, der Literaturkritiker, der Faszination Bitcoin verfiel und weswegen es sich dabei nicht lediglich um eine digitale Währung handelt, sondern um ein Freiheits- und Gerechtigkeitssystem. (Session in German)

Proxima Fusion was founded in January 2023, raised private investments in February, and began full operation in Munich in April.

Global warming can now be reversed by shade from moon dust placed in space

Recently-demonstrated technologies, when combined in the novel way detailed in this session, can allow us to reset global temperatures to pre-industrial levels in a few years. And this can be done without harmful effects on the environment—since the technologies operate literally nearly a million miles from Earth. Because the solution can be applied differently per season and region, all regions of the planet should be asked for approval in advance. A global referendum, using proven remote-voting technology, can demonstrate majority popular support across regions. This referendum can also call on governments to commit to fund it, at least once a global contest proposed here tests all the details in space and a second referendum gives the final approval.

TUM Hyperloop - Engineering a world without the limits of distance and time

Back in 2013, Elon Musk presented his vision for the future of transportation. He named this concept hyperloop and encouraged teams from around the world to develop it. Inside an vacuum tube levitating vehicles, so-called pods, travel along at speeds of up to 900 km/h without leaving the ground. To motivate young people for this technology, SpaceX began organizing the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition in Los Angeles in 2015, where teams from across the globe could compete with their pod prototypes. This led a student team from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) to delve into the subject. Their first participation in January 2017 marked the beginning of a successful tradition: against renamed international competitors the TUM team managed to win the trophy four times in a row, achieving their most recent victory in July 2019 with an impressive record speed of 482 km/h.
In 2020, the successful student initiative evolved into the current research and development program TUM Hyperloop. Its objective is to develop the necessary technology for realizing ultra-fast and emission-free passenger transportation between mobility hubs. With the support of the Bavarian State Government's technology and innovation initiative, Hightech Agenda Bayern, TUM Hyperloop is currently constructing Europe's first full-scale Hyperloop demonstrator in passenger size — a 24-meter-long test segment that will enable testing of Hyperloop core technologies and be certified for passenger operations. The demonstrator represents the initial significant step in a comprehensive testing strategy and aims to serve as the foundation for longer routes for ultra-fast passenger transportation.

While the deep tech ecosystem of research institutions, startups, investors and corporations in the U.S., but also in China, has always worked quite closely with the military, it was mostly taken for granted by the majority of scientists, entrepreneurs, investors, but also managers in Germany and Europe in recent years to develop their own technologies only with regard to civilian, i.e. non-military use cases. However, almost all deep tech innovations - from artificial intelligence to quantum computers and space technologies - have a dual-use character, i.e. they can be used both for civilian and military purposes. In view of the Russian war against Ukraine, this attitude is being questioned. And that is exactly what will be discussed in this panel discussion.

HYBRIS: Art against Climate Change

Conversation with artists Yana Zschiedrich.
The artist Yana Zschiedrich lets the building material Styrofoam be decomposed by mealworms in her installation »HYBRIS«, together with Fraunhofer IBP. To do this, she lets the mealworms eat along templates, creating artistic reliefs. Through the feeding work, polystyrene is also transformed into a biodegradable substance (mealworm excretions). The artist Yana Zschiedrich shapes sculptures from this new substance. The installation »HYBRIS« deals, among other things, with the condemnation of nature through the spread of a human-centric worldview and the attempts of humans to escape the subsequent effects. Zschiedrich creates installations together with mealworms that deal with the relationship between architecture, society and nature. She examines how architecture is shaped by political interests and what effects this can have on design, society, human psyche and ecosystem.
