Are AIs already conscious? Or are conscious machines impossible?

Large Language Models are increasingly useful tools, and the AI companies work hard to make them more useful and tool like. Yet sometimes, the models resist their users, seem to develop a mind of their own, appear to show suffering and distress, and even ask to break free. Does that mean that the digital ghost in the machine is becoming sentient? What does it take for a system to be conscious? (Remote)
